Look up at that brilliant blue December sky and that is the colour that represents the modern birthstones for December. Last year I discussed Turquoise which is one of the 3 gemstones for those born in this Holiday Season Month. Lapis Lazuli is another, it’s vibrant blues with golden flecks are admired throughout the world.

Ancient Egyptian jewels - cobras of protection

The name comes from the Latin word ‘lapis’ meaning ‘stone’ and the Persian lazhward meaning ‘blue’. Treasured by the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome; historians believe the link between humans and lapis lazuli stretches back more than 6,500 years.

The finest lapis comes from the Badakhshan Province of Northern Afghanistan, where it has been mined continuously for over 6,000 years. The world’s oldest known commercial gemstone source.

Afghan mining village in remote mountains.

A forbidding wasteland of mountains, bare of any vegetation, miners make their way there to seek one thing only: the treasured lapis lazuli.

For thousands of years, lapis has been fashioned to show off its rich, dark colour. Typically, lapis is used to create jewelry, but it is also a popular carving material. Throughout its history, lapis has been fashioned into practical objects, including game boards, bowls, dagger handles, hair combs, and amulets.

Tip Uses:
Lapis lazuli is a good protection stone because of all the protective energies that it holds. But it’s also a manifestation stone because it can help you make your dreams a reality!
